So what on Earth is an Ironman?
An Ironman is a long-distance triathlon… comprising a 2.4 mile open-water swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. One after the other. In one day.
The original Ironman was conceived during an awards dinner at the Waikiki Swim Club and the first race happened on February 18th 1978. Since then, tens of thousands of hardy souls have tried – and often succeeded – to battle their way around iron-distance courses around the World.
The pinnacle of the Ironman racing year is the World Championships which happen every October in Kona, Hawaii. The lions-share of competitors at Kona qualify by being fastest in their age group at one of the qualifying events around the globe, so just getting to the start line is an achievement for most.
In addition to the qualifying spots, every year there are a number of charity places which are ‘auctioned’ to people like you and me so we can get to experience this great race and, in the process, raise money for good causes.
