I’m Andrew Day and I’m going to Kona in October of 2016!
As you may have gathered, I’m not a professional triathlete. In fact, up until ten years ago I was (even more) overweight and hadn’t pulled on a pair of running shorts and trainers since I was at school.
So a decade ago I swapped my Vespa scooter for a push bike and started riding to work. I immediately felt like a new person – no more stress, no more desire to reach for the Marlboro Lights and far less of a desire to drink beer during the week.
In 2007 I entered and completed by first Iron-distance triathlon in Austria. I didn’t win, but I did beat my demons. Since then I’ve completed seven full iron-distance triathlons and a dozen or so half-iron distance races.
My approach is simple: I race to train… putting a date in the diary when I have to be ready to compete makes me get out of bed in the morning and run, cycle or swim. It keeps me sane & I love it.
Outside of triathlon, I’m the Chief Data Officer for a corporate business (basically I am a data geek), am married to my adorable wife Sharon and have two brilliant teenage daughters who keep Sharon and me on our toes! Their collective support when I race is legendary – they follow the course for hours cheering everybody on & offering huge amounts of encouragement, often ending up with hoarse voices and sore hands from clapping.
I’m delighted that they will be with me every step of the way & will be travelling to Hawaii in October to cheer me, and everybody else on.
